Rollei 35 Tessar and Sonnar
The Rollei 35 S with the Zeiss Sonnar lens series were made between 1974 until 1980. It has the newly designed 2,8/40mm Sonnar lens (5 elements) in comparison to Tessar lens Rollei 35 T. Camera weight 325 grams Size 97x32x60mm.
The Rollei 35 TE, produced from November 1979 until September 1981. This model featured a meter with LED indicators in the viewfinder, which doesn´t make much sense for this camera. Camera weight is 330 grams Size 97x32x60mm. The cameras is equipped with a Carl Zeiss German made Tessar 3,5/40mm lens, a construction with 4 elements.
Whether you think the single coated Tessar lens or multi coated Sonnar lens is better, it comes down to a matter of taste. Both lenses are excellent, in the normal shooting mode you notice no difference at all
Only in extreme backlit subjects and large magnifications from 50x70cm, the Sonnar lens shows a slightly better sharpness. The meter is accurate enough for color negative and black/white film, but i would not rely on it with slide films.
Please note, that 35mm scans are not always show the full capacity when viewing on a digital screen. These scans need to be printed and than you really say: WOW.
In some occasions, I even prefered the output of this little 35TE over my Summicron 50 (Version IV), especially on black and white negative film.
Get one of these, no matter if S or T, go out, shoot, print and enjoy!
